NSOE/OIT Virtual Computing Lab Pilot
Susan Gerbeth-Jones
This will be a joint presentation with some combination of representatives from both NSOE-IT (Andy Minnis, Matt Kudla, Sg-J) and OIT (Mark McCahill, Liz Wendland, Sean Dilda, and Laurie Harris).
To accommodate more students without expanding the two existing 34 seat labs, the Nicholas School of the Environment (NSOE) has been working with OIT to make three specialized compute environments available virtually with VCL this fall. VCL is a ¿virtual computing lab¿ providing remote access to ArcGIS, NVivo and Stata via a web-based reservation system. By providing anytime remote access to VCL, NSOE achieves better utilization of the pool of licenses. This model also has the potential for new efficiencies for IT administrators with reduced hardware requirements, simplified updates, and application usage tracking).
Commonly available software such as Remote Desktop allows users access to their reserved computer. Access is controlled with Shibboleth Authentication and Grouper, so users see only the images to which their class has been granted access, avoiding redundant group setup, but still allowing ad hoc access. VCL makes use of OIT's investment in VMWare- system resources, which can be increased by simply adding additional Virtual Machines.
What's new with the Duke Digital Initiative, 2009-2010
Erin Nettifee, Michael Faber, OIT; Shawn Miller, CIT
The Duke Digital Initiative (http://dukedigitalinitiative.duke.edu) is a multi-year program of experimentation, development and implementation of new and emerging technologies to explore their effective use in support of the university's mission. At this presentation, DDI staff will give an overview of all of the programs we are supporting, from the newest pilots to the most institutionalized offerings, for the 2009-2010 academic year. We'll talk about the recommendations that we give to faculty and students looking for support with these initiatives and leave plenty of time for questions. If you've ever had a customer ask you about DDI and weren't sure how to answer the question, this session is for you.
Unified Communications: Past, Present and Future
Angel Wingate, OIT; Rafael Rodriquez, DHTS
Duke University and Health System are in the midst of a two year journey to migrate 29,000 telephone lines from legacy switches to a complete Voice over IP & unified communications infrastructure. Come learn about the progress to date and hear about the process used to determine the expected savings and benefits. Presenters will discuss the collaborative approach across the institution among OIT, DHTS and departmental units to ensure a successful implementation and how this project will position the university and health to take full advantage of collaborative technologies like presence and advanced mobility applications in the future.
