Title
= Making the Best of Video Teleconferencing and Webconferencing Resources in the Classroom
Speakers = Miguel Bordo, Carlisle Willard
Abstract = Program Goals: Providing multimedia communications for classes depends on a highly flexible bag of communication resources that allow the user to take advantage of whatever the party at the other end of the conversation has available. While video teleconferencing codecs provide excellent video, audio, and data transfer capabilities, they require a significant amount of material and technical support at both ends of the operation. If the person to which the class needs to connect lacks easy access to videoteleconferencing resources, setup rapidly becomes difficult and time-and-resource consuming. We can provide the higher-end equipment, but teleconferencing is limited to the capabilities of the lowest level of capability. If we make use of a variety of web-based tools, including webconferencing, voice-over-IP, and similar tools, we can be responsive to the needs of both ends of the conversation and provide a greater scope to what video teleconferencing and webconferencing can provide as a resource to classes. Scope: To demonstrate how a variety of programs can be used, sometimes singly and sometimes in tandem to respond to several scenarios: 1. Both ends provided with video teleconferencing codecs capable of data, video, and audio transfer. 2. Local class has a codec, but far end has only a computer with a microphone headset, with no video capability. 3. Far end user has no computer access and can only be contacted by telephone. 4. Using teleconferencing for its superior video and audio capabilities and Elluminate Live as a data and workspace sharing tool.

Title
= Quality in e-Learning: DHTS Technology Education Service
Speaker = Terry Seelinger
Abstract = DHTS Technology Education Services stresses quality in e-learning, from creation process to end product. We focus on proven, evidence-based methods for delivering effective e-learning content, and collaborate with client subject matter experts to arrive at the optimum mix to meet the needs of learners. Examples will be included of: - Process and methods of planning e-learning projects - Formats used in content - Content produced with different tools available

Title
= Virtualization - Server and Personal
Speakers = Mark McCahill, Sean Dilda, Stephen Galla, Mansur Abdulraheem
Abstract = Fuqua Information Technology has deployed VMware in support of its infrastructure and application requirements. Currently, over 50% of the systems provisioned and in service at Fuqua are powered by virtual servers. Additionally, the OIT System Group is running a VMware server virtualization pilot project for both internal and external use. Learn how VMware is being used today for faster server deployment, more robust infrastructure and more efficient use of hardware resources. In addition to server environment virtualization, we are also exploring on-demand reservations for virtual lab environments using NCSUs VCL software - this system provides virtual computing images for what would normally be run on a PC in a walk-in computer lab. This session will discuss the pros and cons of both sorts of virtualization and show examples of how these systems can be used at Duke.

Title
= Digital FAX services
Speaker = Bob Johnson, Nevin Fouts
Abstract = Fuqua, DCRI, and OIT have been together to pilot a Digital FAX service at Duke. This presentation will depict the technical and support infrastructure being deployed in support of this next-generation service.
